■520    ▼aThis  qualitative  study  investigated  the  questions,  "What  is  your  experience  of  the  Divine?"  and  "What  brought  you  to  this?"  The  study  involved  9  participants,  5  females  and  4  males.  Three  sub-groups  within  the  9  were  composed  of  3  lay  persons,  3  vowed  members  of  religious  congregations,  and  3  priests.  The  participants'  ages  ranged  from  the  40s  to  the  60s.  Eight  were  Caucasian,  and  1  was  Asian-American.  All  were  persons  recognized  within  the  larger  Roman  Catholic  community  as  persons  able  to  instruct  and  lead  others  in  spiritual  development.  The  researcher  interviewed  each  of  the  participants  twice.  The  first  interview  typically  lasted  2  to  3  hours.  The  second  interview  typically  lasted  1  to  2  hours.  In  the  first  interview,  the  co-researcher  narrated  significant  events  of  his  or  her  life  journey,  including  important  spiritual  events.  In  the  second  interview,  the  co-researcher  answered  questions  about  his  or  her  spiritual  journey  from  a  questionnaire  developed  by  the  researcher.  Utilizing  grounded  theory,  the  researcher  discerned  3  major  themes  for  each  participant.  From  these  27  major  themes  were  drawn  6  larger  themes  that  linked  and  supported  the  major  themes.  Common  to  6  or  more  participants,  these  larger  themes  were:  an  emphasis  on  community,  experiences  of  interior  and  exterior  suffering,  a  search  for  life's  purpose  and  meaning,  the  value  of  solitude  and  silence,  the  integration  experienced  in  embodiment,  and  an  aesthetic  sensitivity  to  beauty.  A  less  common  larger  theme,  found  in  less  than  6  participants,  was  the  finding  of  the  holy  in  the  ordinary.  These  co-researchers'  explanations  of  the  experience  of  transformation  may  further  understanding  of  transpersonal  development  and  may  provide  insights  for  others  into  the  place  of  choice  and  spiritual  practice  in  that  development.  As  individuals  are  transformed,  so  is  the  world  transformed.
