■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  the  contribution  of  Pope  Pius  XII  to  the  social  doctrine  of  the  Roman  Catholic  Church  in  the  area  of  human  rights  and  democracy.  It  focuses  on  the  nineteen  Christmas  Messages  that  Pius  XII  delivered  during  each  year  of  his  pontificate.  It  supplements  the  study  of  the  Christmas  allocutions  with  an  investigation  of  other  pertinent  addresses  of  Pius  XII  in  order  to  support  the  thesis  of  this  study.  It  is  claimed  that  Pius  XII  did  indeed  further  the  Church's  social  doctrine  in  human  rights  and  democracy  and  that  in  several  significant  ways  he  prepared  the  path  for  the  social  teachings  of  Pope  John  XXIII  and  for  the  social  doctrine  of  the  Second  Vatican  Council.
