■520    ▼aPope  John  Paul  II  has  made  numerous  statements  on  the  necessity,  nature  and  practice  of  interreligious  dialogue.  The  frequent  occurrence  of  this  theme  in  his  addresses  and  writings  can  in  part  be  traced  back  to  his  attempts  to  implement  the  Second  Vatican  Council.  In  addition,  they  are  a  manifestation  and  application  of  the  meaning  of  dialogue  he  expressed  in  pre-papal  writings,  especially  in  his  philosophical  writings  on  the  person.  His  papal  teaching  on  interreligious  dialogue  develop  the  thought  of  the  Council  in  terms  of  his  trinitarian  theology.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  presents  an  exposition  of  the  trinitarian  foundation  of  interreligious  dialogue  in  the  papal  teaching  of  Pope  John  Paul  II.  In  order  to  accomplish  this  it  (1) presents  an  exposition  of  the  notion  of  dialogue  and  interreligious  dialogue  in  the  texts  of  Vatican  II,  (2) examines  the  meanings  of  dialogue  in  the  pre-papal  writings  of  Karol  Wojtyla,  (3) provides  an  exposition  of  the  papal  teaching  of  John  Paul  II  on  interreligious  dialogue,  underlining  the  trinitarian  foundations  of  this  teaching,  and  (4) presents  a  critical  evaluation  of  his  papal  teaching  on  the  trinitarian  foundations  of  interreligious  dialogue  in  terms  of  its  continuity  with  Vatican  II  and  in  terms  of  the  consistency  between  papal  teaching  and  papal  praxis.
