■520    ▼aThe  person  and  role  of  God  the  Father  in  the  Fourth  Gospel  has  been  treated  by  few  scholarly  articles  and  only  tangentially  in  one  monograph-length  treatise.  The  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  add  further  remedy  to  this  lacuna.  The  dissertation  begins  with  a  review  of  the  literature  on  the  subject  over  the  past  hundred  years.  Following  this,  the  methodological  approaches  to  this  topic  of  C.  K.  Barrett,  Paul  W.  Meyer,  Marianne  Meye  Thompson,  D.  Francois  Tolmie  are  reviewed.  The  methodology  chapter  closes  with  the  present  author's  proposed  approach,  drawing  heavily  on  the  work  of  Tolmie  and  Thompson.  Following  this,  the  theme  of  God  as  Father  in  Ancient  Near  Eastern  texts,  the  Old  Testament  and  Second  Temple  Jewish  texts  is  surveyed  in  order  to  determine  any  possible  antecedent  and/or  contemporary  parallels  to  the  Fourth  Gospel's  understanding  of  God  as  Father.  The  following  three  chapters  represent  the  heart  of  the  dissertation  and  present  a  text-sequential  investigation  of  the  presentation  of  God  the  Father  in  the  Fourth  Gospel.  The  strength  of  the  text-sequential  approach  is  that  it  allows  the  presentation  of  a  character  to  be  appreciated  as  that  character  is  shaped  through  the  reading  of  the  narrative.  Thus,  these  chapters  comprise  a  running  commentary  on  the  Gospel  of  John  with  a  focus  on  the  text's  interest  in  God  the  Father's  character,  relations  and  activities.  The  concluding  chapter  summarizes  the  presentation  of  God  the  Father  from  the  preceding  three  chapters  into  text-based  topical  categories.  Thus,  the  dissertation  seeks  to  base  these  topical  conclusions  on  the  foundation  of  the  earlier  and  primary  text-sequential  reading.
