요약 : North African contextual history, records of the Conference of Carthage (411), and Augustine of Hippo's treatises show that the Donatist conflict was settled primarily on historical and legal grounds. Understood in proper context, Augustine's anti-Donatist writings do not support violent suppression or killing of religious dissidents by the state.
초록/해제
요약 : Donatists and catholics viewed their dispute in religious terms; cultural and political factors also contributed. Their fundamental disagreement concerned the nature of Christian purity, and its implications for understanding sacraments, church, and Christian moral life. Donatists defended a material view: Physical contact causes moral contagion requiring ritual purification. Augustine presented a spiritual view: Moral accountability depends upon acts of individual will.
초록/해제
요약 : Despite this theological difference, through legal petitions Roman authorities enforced religious union on legal grounds. Violence, not theology, brought the conflict to the emperors' attention. Under waning Roman legal and political control, Donatists allied with circumcellions caused violent loss of life and property that attracted imperial political intervention. Donatists failed to prove their legal assertions in court and waived objection to government jurisdiction by initiating legal actions seeking enforcement of their own religious claims.
초록/해제
요약 : Augustine's defense of Roman intervention included firm conditions: Nothing must be done on behalf of the church to cause physical injury or death, and discipline must be combined with education. Coercing without teaching is an abuse of authority. Authority must be exercised in love, for the genuine benefit of those subordinated to it, in an economy that recognizes authorities' accountability to God for the quality of their care. While respecting human reason, authorities may choose to address the whole human person, according to individual needs and abilities.
초록/해제
요약 : North African Christians introduced theological arguments implicitly requiring definite limits on hierarchical authority. Tertullian defends religious liberty as an individual human right (Cyprian restricts it to bishops). Augustine's acts as bishop affect others' lives for theological reasons that validate individual responsibility for religious beliefs and practices—even when Roman law authorizes compulsion by legal superiors. Applying Christian principles against traditional authoritarian norms, Augustine begins to humanize authority-structures and recognize a larger scope for individual self-determination.
