■520    ▼aSeventeenth  century  Christendom  witnessed  a  proliferation  of  theological  divisions;  yet,  some  figures  moved  fluidly  between  opposing  schools  of  thought,  creating  syntheses  of  their  own.  Among  them,  Anna  Maria  van  Schurman  and  Madame  Jeanne  Guyon  made  daring  maneuvers,  integrating  themes  from  other  traditions.  Although  they  represent  competing  theological  worlds,  their  writings  intersect  at  vital  points.  They  both  argue  that  the  chief  end  of  humanity  is  to  enjoy  God,  its  summum  bonum—but  that  the  path  to  deepest  enjoyment  is  fraught  with  difficulty.  Offering  oneself  as  a  "living  sacrifice"  to  God,  through  self-denial,  or  self-annihilation,  was,  for  them,  the  indispensable  key  to  finding  greatest  delight  in  God.
■520    ▼aChapter  One  introduces  the  theme  of  frui  dei  and  the  particular  permutations  that  van  Schurman  and  Guyon  added  to  this  theme,  namely,  the  cost  of  enjoyment.  It  also  offers  an  overview  of  recent  scholarship  on  both  these  figures,  arguing  for  a  fresh  retrieval  of  their  theological  writings.  It  then  outlines  the  structure  of  the  following  work  and  introduces  the  primary  texts  that  are  the  focus  of  this  study.
■520    ▼aChapter  Two  provides  historical  background  to  Anna  Maria  van  Schurman's  life  and  work,  and  transitions  into  an  in-depth  analysis  of  her  Eukleria  ,  as  well  as  her  correspondence  with  Johannes  Jacob  Schutz.  In  these  texts,  the  theme  of  self-denial  as  the  key  to  intima  notitia  dei  (intimate  knowledge  of  God)  is  laid  out—a  knowledge  that  leads  to  the  fullest  enjoyment  of  God.
■520    ▼aChapter  Three,  after  offering  a  brief  overview  of  Madame  Jeanne  Guyon's  life,  explores  the  theme  of  self-annihilation  as  detailed  in  her    Commentaire  Au  Cantique  Des  Cantiques  De  Salomon.  It  examines  the  path  from  spiritual  betrothal  to  marriage  (the  height  of  enjoyment  in  God)—a  marriage  made  possible  by  the  "final  sacrifice"  or  "renunciation"  of  the  betrothed.  It  also  analyzes  the  question  of  human  agency,  as  well  as  some  of  the  difficulties  with  Guyon's  description  of  the  bride's  ability,  or  inability,  to  "desire.".
