■520    ▼aIn  the  Catholic  tradition  the  belief  in  the  goodness  of  the  material  world  and  in  the  dignity  of  the  human  person  form  the  basis  for  the  Catholic  principle  of  the  priority  of  the  social  function  of  property  over  the  right  of  ownership.  Although  this  principle  has  been  applied  by  believers  in  a  variety  of  ways,  it  has  been  widely  accepted  for  much  of  Christian  history.  As  a  result  of  the  Enlightenment,  however,  a  growing  disregard  for  Christian  economic  and  social  thinking  developed.
■520    ▼aPope  Leo  XIII  (1878-1903)  initiated  the  modern  papal  social  teaching  tradition  with  the  encyclical  Rerum  Novarum  (1891),  and  it  has  been  carried  on  by  Popes  Pius  XI  (1922-39),  Pius  XII  (1939-58),  John  XXIII  (1958-63),  Paul  VI  (1963-78),  and  also  by  Vatican  Council  II  (1962-65).
■520    ▼aThe  aim  of  this  dissertation  is  to  examine  in  depth  the  property  teaching  of  Pope  Paul  VI  as  it  is  contained  in  his  four  major  social  documents:  Populorum  Progressio  (1967),  Octogesima  Adveniens  (1971),  De  Iustitia  in  Mundo  (1971),  and  Evangelii  Nuntiandi  (1975).  A  series  of  related  background  topics  are  also  addressed.
■520    ▼aWithin  each  chapter  of  this  essay  there  is  a  similar  internal  structure.  First  the  topic  is  situated  within  its  proper  historical  setting.  This  is  followed  by  a  presentation  on  Christian  anthropology.  Third,  a  series  of  topics  related  to  the  property  teaching  are  examined.  Finally,  the  property  teaching  itself  is  discussed  under  four  headings:  the  right  of  ownership  and  the  social  function  of  property,  the  definition  of  property,  the  purposes  of  property,  and  the  role  of  the  state  in  promoting  and  protecting  property  rights.
■520    ▼aPope  Paul  VI's  property  teaching  illustrates  the  profundity  of  the  ancient  teaching  on  the  primacy  of  the  social  function  of  property.  His  far-reaching  and  timely  application  of  this  and  other  principles  demonstrates  the  ongoing  vitality  of  that  tradition.
