■520    ▼aWhile  the  general  curricula  on  the  subject  of  new  member  orientation  programs  were  considerable,  there  was  a  limited  reservoir  of  published  materials  prepared  specifically  for  African-American  congregations.  The  purpose  of  this  project  was  to  create,  implement,  and  evaluate  a  plan  to  orient  persons  seeking  membership  with  the  Friendship  Missionary  Baptist  Church  of  Vallejo,  California.  Prospective  new  members  affiliate  with  the  church  by  letter,  statement  of  Christian  experience,  or  a  profession  of  faith.
■520    ▼aThe  Gospel  According  to  Mark  was  used  to  form  the  biblical-theological  base  since  Mark  wrote  to  the  persecuted  Christians  of  his  time.  The  researcher  held  that  the  Gospel  According  to  Mark  would  inspire  hope  for  African-Americans,  and  dramatize  how  Jesus  liberates  people  from  sin,  sickness,  demonic  oppression,  and  leads  the  way  into  a  new  community  of  faith,  hope,  justice,  and  continuous  discipleship.
■520    ▼aA  questionnaire  was  designed  and  sent  to  pastors  of  twenty-nine  predominately  African-American  churches  in  the  San  Francisco  Bay  Area  to  determine:  (1)  the  existence  and  duration  of  orientation;  (2)  curricula  being  used;  and  (3)  the  overall  effectiveness  of  the  efforts  to  orient  and  retain  new  members.  The  input  gathered  from  the  pastors  was  used  in  the  construction  of  the  program  to  orient  prospective  new  members.
■520    ▼aUpon  affiliating  with  the  congregation,  the  new  members  were  given  a  packet  of  materials.  Included  was  a  schedule  of  eight,  ninety  minute  orientation  class  sessions  to  be  held  once  each  week.  A  pretest  and  posttest  were  administered  and  the  results  compared  to  determine  the  effectiveness  of  the  program.  Participants  submitted  a  self  evaluation  and  course  evaluation  to  assist  in  the  review  and  improvement  of  the  training  experience.
■520    ▼aBased  on  the  evaluation  instruments,  homework  assignments,  and  classroom  participation,  it  was  concluded  that  trainees  comprehended  the  basic  Christian  doctrines  of  salvation,  baptism,  discipleship,  missions,  and  a  willingness  to  serve.  It  was  concluded  that  the  plan  to  orient  new  members  would  have  immediate  and  long  range  benefits  to  the  church.  The  congregation  was  in  a  spirit  of  renewal  throughout  the  implementation  and  completion  of  the  project.  The  pastor  realized  a  sense  of  achievement  in  being  able  to  broaden  his  pastoral  competence  and  ability  to  orient  and  retain  new  members.
