요약 : My thesis is that inter-personal relations constituted an integral element in the spirituality of Eastern Christian Monasticism in the fourth through the eleventh centuries. I demonstrate this thesis by analyzing some central themes in selected relevant passages from a collection of ascetical teachings drawn from these centuries, compiled by Abbot Paul, the founder of the Evergetidos Monastery in Constantinople in the middle of the eleventh century, and entitled the Evergetinos.
초록/해제
요약 : The Evergetinos, which has never been treated to a full-length study, represents a development of the genre of ascetical literature whose foundational text is the Apophthegmata Patrum. The text deals with particular virtues and vices, and how to acquire and avoid them, or offers advice to superiors and beginners on how to handle problems that commonly arise in monastic life.
초록/해제
요약 : In the first part of the dissertation I set forth the necessary historical background for discussion of the texts by tracing the development of monasticism from the fourth through the eleventh centuries, and I conclude this part with a detailed survey of Evergetidos and its monastic Typikon (rule) and of the origins and sources of the Evergetinos. In the second part, after describing the structure of the collection, I discuss the monk in relation to the world that he renounces, to his brothers, and to his elders.
초록/해제
요약 : From my analysis of the texts contained in the Evergetinos and the way in which Paul arranges them, it emerges that by the middle of the eleventh century we have a fusion of two emphases in Eastern monasticism that at times diverged from each other but never irreconcilably so, namely those of solitude and community. The solitary became incorporated into the enclosure represented by the walls of the monastery, which in turn was enriched by the spiritual wisdom derived from his ascetical struggles. The Evergetinos is a literary icon of this process, encompassing within its pages stories and teachings drawn from the eremitic tradition as well as the more communally-oriented lavriote and coenobitic traditions.
