요약 : Working with a psycho-symbolic method, this study demonstrates not only that there are, in fact, significant feminine elements to be found in the christological symbolism of the Gospel of John, but also that these feminine elements are pervasive throughout the text. Psycho-symbolic interpretation, an adaptation of C. G. Jung's method of dream interpretation, integrates exegetical, literary, comparative, and psychological analyses into a reflexive and holistic hermeneutic that makes it possible to move through Ricoeur's double dialectic, from naive understanding to explanation, and on through the so-called second naivete of comprehension and appropriation back to explanation.

요약 : The study divides the Gospel into a Book of Signs (chs. 1?11), a Book of Glory (chs. 12?19), and an open-ended Book of Presence (chs. 20?21). Two key pericopes from the Book of Glory, and one each from the other two are analyzed in detail. The first analysis deals with the Bread of Life discourse (Jn 6:35?48) and explores significant symbolic associations with both Lady Wisdom and the Greek goddess Demeter. Analysis of the raising of Lazarus (Jn 11:1?44) reveals important associations with the mythical domain of the Egyptian goddess Isis. The third analysis focuses on the True Vine discourse (Jn 15:1?5) and uncovers symbolic associations with Dionysos, who turns out to have strong associations with both the masculine and the feminine. The final analysis uncovers powerful associations with the feminine in the resurrection tradition associated with Mary Magdalene (Jn 20:14?18).

요약 : The cumulative impact of the analyses of these four key pericopes demonstrates the significance of feminine elements in the Gospel's christological symbolism; a brief survey of other pericopes demonstrates their pervasiveness. When viewed from a psychological perspective, the results of this study suggest that Jung's critique of the symbolism of Christ needs to be reconsidered. The feminine elements found in the Johannine symbolism indicate that the Johannine Christ is not a figure entirely devoid of shadow (as Jung's critique would imply), but rather presents a symbolic coniunctio of masculine and feminine. The Johannine Christ, therefore, is seen to be a more adequate archetypal image of the self than Jung recognized.
