- 요약 : The dissertation explores theological reflection on the religious meaning of the natural world within a sacramental model, undergirded by a Whiteheadian process metaphysics. After canvassing several models that have been used for theology of nature, the project settles on the use of a sacramental model, in which the entities, structures, and processes of the world are understood as material realities taken up into spiritual relations in the purposes of God. The basic notion of sacrament is then expanded into a fourfold order of sacramental relations, in which creation, Christ, church, and ceremony are each examined as effective signs of God's presence and purpose. The fourfold order is further explicated in the terms of a Whiteheadian process-relational metaphysical scheme, arriving at a definition of sacraments as societies of occasions so ordered that streams of influence from God, Christ, and participant subsocieties come together to elicit into prominence the feeling of Peace, defined as the harmony of harmonies, richness of experience, and mutual wellbeing. Complex phenomena described by the natural sciences, as diverse as predation in ecosystems, supernova explosions and second-generation star- and planet-formation, and proliferation of life forms and increase of diversity in forest communities, can all be understood as societies of occasions ordered to Peace; they therefore all have a sacramental dimension. As highly structured subsocieties within the structured society of Earth, human beings can function as priests in this sacramental dimension of nature. As the priest in the eucharist has the function of initiating dialogue, giving space to liturgical participants, and speaking on behalf of the assembly, thereby contributing a stream of influence to the sacramental action that contributes to the social feeling of God's Peace, so the human community within the earth community is called to contribute to the Peace of the local ecosystem and of the world through involvement, healing, and advocacy. The sacramental vision of a eucharistic universe thus has important religious and ethical significance for theology of nature.
