요약 : Robert Frost wrote of two roads converging in a wood, and of the difficulty he experienced in choosing between them. For many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Christians, this scenario is all too familiar. At some point in their lives, these people face a choice between two seemingly irreconcilable yet important paths: Christian belief and a minority sexual or gender identity. When faced with this crossroad, people often select one pathway over the other. Those who choose Christianity may struggle to be heterosexual or to identify with their socially ascribed gender, and those who choose LGBT identity may reject Christianity. But a growing and increasingly vocal number of people are refusing to make that wrenching decision. They choose instead to alter the landscape, turning diverging roads into converging ones. These LGBT Christians are the subject of the following pages.

요약 : This study focuses on two member congregations of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC), an international denomination that predominantly serves LGBT Christians. Working from interviews, questionnaires, and fieldwork data, the study examines the identity conflicts that may arise when a Christian acknowledges her or his LGBT identity, and traces the variety of ways in which those affiliated with these two congregations have resolved such conflicts. Noting that participants often joined a UFMCC church at some point during the identity integration process, the study moves to consider the roles of MCC in the lives of these LGBT Christians. It concludes by exploring the ways in which further study of LGBT Christians can deepen our understanding of religion and identity in an era of increasing religious individualism.
