요약 : Paul's teachings regarding sexual behavior are not normatively binding for contemporary deliberations regarding homosexuality because (1) there is virtually no overlap between ancient and modern constructions of sexual behavior, and (2) Paul only provided a provisional apocalyptic ethic under the dual constraints of imminent expectation and Roman imperialism. Biblical scholarship has been characterized by a pervasive departmental isolationism which has resulted in the privileging of historical and literary methodologies as the only legitimate and credible approaches to biblical interpretation. This is, in part, the legacy of Johann Philipp Gabler who first defined the field as a distinct and separate discipline limited to philological and historical concerns. Such an understanding of the endeavor of biblical interpretation renders invisible the ideological interests advanced, but left unexamined, by these methods of interpretation. Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza has challenged the guild of biblical interpreters to accept responsibility for the political consequences of its scholarship. Likewise, Krister Stendahl has called attention to the “detrimental and dangerous effects” biblical interpretation has historically had on disenfranchised groups. In order to produce politically responsible interpretations of the biblical material regarding sexual practices, interpreters must examine two widespread but uncritical assumptions that have been operative in the interpretation of Paul. First, scholars have made the assumption that the sexual practices discussed in Paul's letters are to be understood through the lens of contemporary constructions of sexuality. And second, they assume that heterosexual relations are the only appropriate expression for human sexuality. There is therefore a need to reexamine the Pauline texts in light of a more complex analysis of social constructions of sexuality. Such an analysis will help illumine the relationship between biblical interpretation and the anti-gay ethos in our culture. Furthermore, interpreters have tended to de-politicize Paul's apocalypticism by giving inadequate attention to his concrete historical and religio-political context under Roman imperialism. There are strong warrants for situating Paul within the stream of late Second Temple Judean apocalypticism. The apocalypticism of Paul has intriguing potential for an ethos of resistance to modern imperial formations.
