요약 : The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the progression through periods of prolonged family suffering, to discover the meaning ascribed, and to describe the healing process. Guided by philosophical hermeneutics and the Modeling and Role-Modeling theory and paradigm, an interpretative descriptive method combined with a story-prompting data collection technique was used.
초록/해제
요약 : Purposive and theoretical sampling techniques resulted in 11 participants from six families. Data were analyzed using the interpretative descriptive method and the hermeneutic circle.
초록/해제
요약 : Prolonged family suffering involved innocent suffering which began suddenly with a dramatic loss or series of losses, called a time of torment. Sequential losses occurred affecting three to four family generations. Losses ranged from health related problems to financial and social problems. While losses varied, responses were similar. There was extended questioning and feelings of aloneness. The most significant form of questions asked were "Is God still there?", or "Why did God allow this to happen?". Participants had an existing relationships with God but did not understand what He was doing.
초록/해제
요약 : A second time of torment further intensified questioning and/or the sense of aloneness. Encounters with health care professionals tended to increase a person's suffering. Physical wounds were treated but the invisible wounds of suffering were left unattended.
초록/해제
요약 : Participants learned to endure suffering. Enduring was a lengthy process of learning to withstand, to fight, to live through wounding, to withdraw as needed, to work with suffering, and to wait. While coming in multiple forms, healing resulted in an inward discovery of truth that led participants to see life in new ways.
초록/해제
요약 : Eventually, suffering gave way to an enhanced spiritual identity—a definition of self that relied on spiritual things which were increasingly transcendent of physical existence. One saw self, others, life, and God differently.
초록/해제
요약 : Nurses need to recognize and acknowledge periods of suffering. Nurses can facilitate healing and promote growth through nurturing, spiritual relationships.
