■520    ▼aThis  study  is  an  analysis  of  the  narratives  of  self-identified  lesbian  women.  It  is  an  effort  to  understand  the  process  of  change  many  lesbians  experience  subsequent  to  self-realization  of  their  sexuality.  The  theory  of  transformational  learning  predicts  that  change  through  self-reflection  on  meaning  perspectives  often  results  when  a  disorienting  dilemma  instigates  the  process.  The  process  of  change  manifests  through  identity  development.
■520    ▼aFor  the  women  in  this  study  the  relationship  between  their  religious  beliefs  and  their  sexual  orientation  served  as  a  potential  disorienting  event.  Similar  processes  of  change  and  transformation  were  identified  for  4  groups  of  women.  A  fifth  group  had  similarities  apart  from  the  dissonance  created  by  incongruence  between  religious  beliefs  and  sexuality.  Results  confirm  the  theory  of  transformational  learning  when  the  disorienting  event  produces  sufficient  cognitive  dissonance  for  self-reflection.
