요약 : The main objective of this study was to learn how to apply what we already know about the power of animals in helping humans heal to clients who are healing from childhood abuse. By understanding the nature of the relationship between this population and their animal companions, we, as practitioners, will have additional knowledge and tools, whether we are engaging in Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) or aiding a client who has a strong bond with his or her own animal companion. The theoretical framework was derived from a relational theory of healing. It is the relationship that heals and our relationships with animal companions are every bit as healing, and sometimes more healing, as our relationships with other humans. Data were collected via unstructured interviews with seven adult survivors of childhood abuse. The themes identified were (1) Unconditional Love & Acceptance, (2) Security, (3) The Desire to Nurture, (4) Get Out of Myself, (5) Help with Humans, (6) Accurate Empathetic Understanding, (7) Reason to Live, (8) Helped Me Escape, (9) Accept Self, (10) Feel Powerful, and (11) Takes in Energy. Examination of the data showed that healing relationships with animal companions have similar characteristics to healing relationships with a therapist. This study has implications for the practice of psychology with this population in situations involving AAT, where the client has an animal companion, or where the therapist senses that an animal companion may help the healing process because the client feels an affinity with animals. The study indicates that encouraging clients who have a natural affinity with animals to acquire a cat, dog, or horse might be beneficial to their healing process because they learn to trust others and may also begin to see the loveable qualities in themselves. AAT can be a useful tool to facilitate an awareness of the client's role and behavior in relationships. Horses and dogs seem to be particularly suited to AAT because more people have allergies to cats, and the feline species seems to engage more selectively. Therapists must be careful, however, to protect the client, the animal co-therapist, and themselves.
