■520    ▼aJohn  Knox  and  Günther  Bornkamm  assume  that  Paul's  ongoing  efforts  to  nurture  established  communities  of  faith  represent  an  ancillary  facet  of  his  apostolic  career.  W.  Paul  Bowers's  1987  article,  “Fulfilling  the  Gospel:  The  Scope  of  the  Pauline  Mission,”  represents  an  initial  attempt  to  refute  this  idea,  arguing  that  Paul's  understanding  of  his  apostolic  vocation  includes  his  ongoing  efforts  to  nurture  established  communities.  Yet  Bowers's  work  has  been  almost  completely  neglected  in  wider  Pauline  scholarship.
■520    ▼aThis  study  explores  whether  Bowers's  thesis  is  sustainable  and  presses  beyond  it  in  order  to  explore  some  of  the  implications  of  a  broadly-conceived  Pauline  understanding  of  mission.
■520    ▼aFollowing  an  introduction  in  chapter  one,  the  second  chapter  highlights  the  primary  evidence  for  a  comprehensive  Pauline  understanding  of  mission:  Paul's  letters  themselves  and  two  especially  key  texts,  1  Cor  9:19-23  and  10:31-11:1.  These  passages  demonstrate  that  Paul's  mission  embraces  his  efforts  “to  save”  both  Christians  and  non-Christians;  moreover,  they  emphasize  that  Paul  is  concerned  not  only  with  Christian  behavior  itself,  but  with  the  intentionality  that  motivates  it.
■520    ▼aChapter  three  surveys  secondary  evidence  from  the  remainder  of  Paul's  undisputed  letters,  most  of  which  Bowers  does  not  adequately  exploit  or  even  mention.  It  demonstrates  exegetically  that  Bowers's  basic  contention—that  Paul  nurtures  established  churches  as  part  of  his  apostolic  vocation—has  extensive  and  compelling  support.
■520    ▼aThis  conclusion  has  significant  implications  for  Pauline  scholarship,  implications  not  addressed  by  Bowers.  Everything  in  the  apostle's  undisputed  letters—not  merely  data  pertaining  to  initial  evangelism  or  community  formation—may  be  described  in  terms  of  his  mission.  This  includes  Paul's  moral  reflection—a  facet  of  the  apostle's  thought  that  some  have  considered  only  loosely  connected  to  his  wider  thought.
■520    ▼aChapter  four  highlights  two  interpretive  benefits  of  Paul's  broadly-conceived  mission.  First,  Paul's  moral  reflections  are  always  missiological,  even  if  they  are  not  strictly  evangelistic.  Second,  Paul  is  regularly  concerned  about  the  evangelistic  function  of  Christian  behavior  when  he  mentions  pagans  or  outsiders  in  the  context  of  moral  exhortation—even  if  he  does  not  identify  such  a  concern  explicitly.
