요약 : Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is prevalent in today's society, and the sequelae can be devastating. It follows from several theories (e.g., attachment theory, cognitive development, grief and loss, narrative psychology, and theories of traumatic memory) that talking about traumatic incidents in the context of a supportive relationship is key to recovering from the effects of abuse. However, these same theories imply that abuse impairs the ability to engage in close relationships and talk openly about abusive incidents.

요약 : This study examined the healing journeys of 16 women who had been sexually abused by a primary caregiver while growing up. The purpose was to build a model that explains how women engage in the process of healing. The method was qualitative, and utilized a semi-structured, one hour long interview with each participant. The interviews were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's (1990, 1999) Grounded Theory method.

요약 : Based on this study, healing may be conceptualized as the process of climbing up a mountain that contains several distinct pitches or levels, each with a unique set of issues to address. A person climbing up this Hierarchy of Healing can stop wherever she wishes on the mountain, and is free to move about at her own pace. A multitude of healing tools are available to those on the mountain, such as talking about the abuse and helping others, and can be conceptualized as climbing aids. As a person becomes familiar with the nature of specific tools, she learns to trust the tools, and moving about the Hierarchy of Healing becomes less intimidating. Women who have experienced CSA must often stretch themselves to utilize “tools” that may initially seem foreign and uncomfortable, especially the tool of talking about the abuse. However, with persistence and a refusal to give up, it seems that there may be no barriers to how far a woman who has experienced CSA can progress.
초록/해제
요약 : This model may be a useful guide for those who have experienced CSA, and for the therapists who help them. As such, it lays out some of the issues and tools that are core to the healing process.
