요약 : The nature of this dissertation is a comparative evaluation of the anthropological foundations of Christian social ethics in the theologies of Emil Brunner (1886-1972) and Douglas John Hall (1928- ). Both are major theologians of the twentieth century of different historical and geographical contexts who have each developed the doctrine of the imago Dei in terms of a relational human ontology and used it foundationally for the construction of a contextually-informed political ethic. This dissertation interprets, identifies, and compares the respective developments of the anthropological doctrine of each theologian. It also examines how this development bears upon the nature and relative success of each theologian's respective proposal for a substantive Christian social ethic.

요약 : Through its examination and comparative assessment the dissertation argues that Emil Brunner's development of the imago Dei as a relational human ontology provides a generally better and more successful anthropological foundation for a Christian political ethic than that of Douglas John Hall. Brunner's understanding of the image as responsibility, through its distinction between agapic and juridical modes of human intersubjectivity, provides Brunner with a distinct set of ontological categories through which to construct a substantive ethic. Through his doctrine of vocation and social ontology of Christian federalism, Brunner attends to the institutional nature of created human life and thereby offers concrete parameters for Christian ethical practice and reform. Hall's identification of the image with dominion, however, precludes the development of distinct juridical categories. His ethic of stewardship falters in its lack of substance for this reason. In this way the dissertation recommends Brunner's anthropology over that of Hall for the construction of a Christian political ethic.
