■520    ▼aThis  research  project  is  devoted  to  exploring  the  history,  practice,  understanding,  and  theology  of  the  Lord's  Supper  in  the  Korean  Methodist  tradition  from  1885  to  1935.  The  principal  task  of  the  study  is  to  engage  a  theological  and  liturgical  analysis  of  the  Lord's  Supper  in  the  Korean  Methodist  churches  through  an  examination  of  the  Annual  Reports,  the  Official  Minutes,  letters,  and  journals  of  the  missionaries,  as  well  as  various  versions  of  the    Doctrine  and  Discipline  from  1885  through  1935.  As  a  result  of  those  tasks,  several  significant  aspects  of  the  Lord's  Supper  and  its  incorporation  into  the  liturgical  life  of  Korean  Methodist  Christians  have  been  identified  and  explained.
■520    ▼aFirst,  the  early  Methodist  missionaries  brought  the  practice  and  understanding  of  the  Lord's  Supper  of  the  American  Methodism  to  the  early  Korean  Methodist  churches.  They  translated  English  editions  of  the  liturgy  of  the  Lord's  Supper  into  Korean.  They  also  educated  the  Koreans  regarding  the  Lord's  Supper  in  several  theological  and  biblical  institutions.
■520    ▼aSecond,  the  practice  and  understanding  of  the  Lord's  Supper  was  adopted  by  the  Korean  Methodist  churches  without  any  revisions  from  the  earliest  days  of  the  Korean  Methodist  churches  until  the  birth  of  the  Korean  Methodist  Church  in  1930.
■520    ▼aThird,  the  Korean  Methodist  churches  and  their  leaders  did  not  fully  understand  the  significance  of  the  Lord's  Supper.  Furthermore,  the  early  Korean  Methodist  churches  did  not  observe  the  Lord's  Supper  frequently.
■520    ▼aFinally,  in  summary,  this  study  has  revealed  that  for  forty-five  years,  from  1885  to  1930,  the  Lord's  Supper  was  observed  by  the  Korean  Methodists  and  their  churches.  During  this  period,  of  significance  is  the  fact  that  they  mainly  preserved  the  Western  pattern  of  the  liturgy  of  the  Lord's  Supper  without  any  major  changes  from  the  patterns  of  the  American  missionaries.  However,  along  with  the  birth  of  the  Korean  Methodist  Church  in  1930,  substantial  changes  were  made  to  the  liturgy  of  the  Lord's  Supper.  In  spite  of  these  changes,  in  both  words  of  the  ritual  and  the  accompanying  prayers,  the  liturgy  of  the  Lord's  Supper  in  the  Korean  Methodist  Church  still  preserved  the  liturgy  of  the  American  Methodism  without  any  aspect  of  Koreanness  being  incorporated  into  the  ritual.
