■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  the  present  research  was  to  analyze  the  relationship  between  religion  and  integration  using  NORC  data  for  1972-1980.
■520    ▼aReligious  commitment  was  operationally  defined  as  church  attendance  (belonging  dimension)  and  religious  consciousness  (meaning  dimension)  and  integration  as  low  anomie  (social  level)  and  high  life  satisfaction  (personal  level).
■520    ▼aThe  basic  assumption  in  this  study  was  that  religious  commitment  contributes  to  social  integration  by  providing  and  maintaining  socio-cultural  values  and  norms,  that  is,  to  low  anomie,  on  the  one  hand,  and  to  personal  integration  by  motivating  and  enhancing  personal  meaning  and  satisfaction,  that  is,  to  high  life  satisfaction,  on  the  other.
■520    ▼aThus,  four  hypotheses  were  formulated  to  be  tested  by  statistical  methods:  (1)  Church  attendance  (CA)  is  significantly  and  negatively  related  to  anomie  (AN);  (2)  Religious  consciousness  (RC)  is  significantly  and  negatively  associated  with  AN;  (3)  CA  is  significantly  and  positively  correlated  with  life  satisfaction  (LS);  and  (4)  RC  is  significantly  and  positively  associated  with  LS.
■520    ▼aTo  examine  the  relationships,  CA  and  RC  were  treated  as  independent  variables  and  AN  and  LS  as  dependent  variables.  SES,  economic  mobility,  social  participation,  sex,  age,  marital  status,  race,  region,  religious  preference,  and  denomination  were  used  as  control  variables.
■520    ▼aIt  was  found  that  Hypothesis  1  was  only  partially  supported  by  the  data  presented  in  this  research  in  that  there  appeared  a  weak  correlation  between  CA  and  AN  even  though  the  direction  of  the  relationship  was  negative.  And  Hypothesis  2  was  not  supported  as  the  results  of  the  data  show  no  significant  relationship  between  RC  and  AN.
■520    ▼aIt  was  also  found  that  Hypothesis  3  and  Hypothesis  4  were  supported  by  the  data,  showing  that  positive  relationships  between  CA  and  LS,  and  between  RC  and  LS  obtain  statistical  significance  beyond  .001  level  even  when  all  the  control  variables  were  controlled.
■520    ▼aThus,  it  was  concluded  that  religion  exclusively  defined  as  the  institutionalized  church  religion  in  America  does  contribute  to  personal  integration  in  a  moderate  degree,  but  little  to  social  integration.
