■520    ▼aThis  study  is  to  develop  a  theological  formulation  and  an  explanation  of  Minjung  (People)  Theology  which  is  emerging  among  South  Korean  Christian  churches  in  response  to  the  human  rights  concerns  in  South  Korea.  Minjung  Theology  is  a  concentrated  attempt  to  deal  theologically  with  the  reality  of  the  minjung.  The  plight  of  the  minjung  is  not  restricted  to  the  Korean  context,  but  can  provide  a  framework  for  theologies  of  people  in  all  of  Asia,  along  with  the  Asian  people's  movements.  The  subject  matter  of  Minjung  Theology  is  the  subjectivity  of  the  people  in  history.
■520    ▼aMinjung  Theology  began  with  the  human  rights  movement  in  Korea  in  the  1970s.  This  movement  arose  from  experiences  of  the  deep  contradictions  in  Korean  society,  as  expressed  in  the  conflicts  between  rulers  and  ruled  and  manifested  in  the  suffering  of  the  minjung.  The  socio-historical  context  is  described  in  chapter  1.  Intellectuals  in  various  fields  have  been  involved  in  the  minjung  movement,  and  chapter  2  analyzes  how  they  respond  to  the  minjung  movement  from  their  disciplinary  perspectives.
■520    ▼aKorean  theology's  encounter  with  the  minjung  movement  is  then  considered.  Chapter  3  discusses  the  development  of  Minjung  Theology  within  the  history  of  Korean  theology.  Minjung  theologians  reflected  on  the  minjung  experience  and  became  open  to  the  possibility  of  theological  transformation.
■520    ▼aIn  chapter  4  attention  is  turned  directly  to  minjung  theological  perspectives  in  light  of  the  Christian  doctrinal  matrix:  God,  Christ  and  Holy  Spirit.  Minjung  Theology's  principles  for  understanding  its  sources  and  norms  are  first  appraised.  Then  a  constructive  theological  system  is  formulated  in  presenting  a  comprehensive  explanation  of  minjung  theology,  which  is  established  with  the  methodology  of  describing  minjung  reality.
■520    ▼aIn  chapter  5  Minjung  Theology  is  related  to  the  theology  of  people  in  the  Asian  context.  Some  creative  contributions  of  minjung  theology  for  doing  theology  in  Asia  are  discussed  along  with  the  background  of  Asian  theological  reflection,  hermeneutics,  ideology,  power  and  history.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  concludes  that  minjung  dialectical  methodology  derived  from  the  minjung's  socio-historical  experience  is  a  key  for  creating  a  new  Asian  theology  for  the  empowerment  of  the  people.
