요약 : The polar ontological elements of reality are reflected in Tillich's interpretation of history. On the one hand, the elements of the self-relatedness of being such as individualization, dynamics, and freedom constitute the meaning of autonomy as the thematic category for the interpretation of history. On the other hand, the elements of the belongingness of being to the world such as participation, form, and destiny constitute the meaning of heteronomy as the anti-thematic category for the interpretation of history. Both autonomy and heteronomy are preceded by and quest for the syn-thematic category, namely theonomy. Theonomy points to the ontologically primary phenomenon of the encounter of self and world; such encounter goes beyond the mere self-relatedness of being (or autonomy) as well as the pure belongingness of being (or heteronomy). In the category of theonomy the ontological elements, which run into mutual conflict between the autonomous pole and the heteronomous pole, keep a tentative balance under the conditions of existence.

요약 : The history of Western modern society has been marked by the predominance of modern autonomy over against the medieval heteronomy. Thus the Western autonomy has operated in the predominance of such ontological elements as individualization, dynamics, and freedom. To the contrary, the history of Eastern traditional society has been marked by the predominance of feudal heteronomy over against the modern autonomy. Thus the Eastern heteronomy has operated in the predominance of such ontological elements as participation, form, and destiny. Both types of society and history are not only preceded by a primitive theonomy, in which autonomy and heteronomy are not yet differentiated, but also quest for a new theonomous achievement of a tentative balance between autonomy and heteronomy which does justice to both sides of the polarities by holding them in vital tension. In the contemporary Asian society, however, appear the tragic tension and the demonic conflict between the Western autonomy and the Eastern heteronomy. Therefore, it becomes necessary for the Asian people to quest for the new meaning of theonomy in their messianic expectation of an Eastern kairos.
