요약 : The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the connections between theology of John Wesley and Korean minjung theology. For Wesley, sanctification has both a holistic factor and an incarnational factor. Particularly, for Wesley, incarnational love is interpreted as liberation. While he wrote and preached about social injustice and oppression, Wesley practiced the movements of liberation from oppression and poverty. There was no gap between the social practices and the expressions of faith among Methodists. Thus, for Wesley, sanctification is identified with social liberation.

요약 : Korean minjung theology also interprets sanctification as liberation just as Wesley did. A basic foundation of minjung theology is to interpret liberation as the experience of the Holy Spirit. For minjung theologians, the power of liberation from suffering comes from the Holy Spirit. At this point, one can see the similarity and connection between the two theologies.

요약 : The consequences of examining the theology of social sanctification in the two theologies can be demonstrated in several common theological perspectives. The subject of social sanctification is minjung in both minjung theology and Wesley's thought. For both minjung theology and Wesley's thought, social sanctification is revealed by the dynamics of the Holy Spirit who sanctifies Christians and society with minjung. While Wesley's theology is one which impacted on liberation of laborers and women in the eighteenth century, minjung theology has influenced liberation in the process of democratization. Their strong belief in perfect sanctification in history is expressed in the concept of the present kingdom of God or millennium. While minjung theology has the strength of both political and economic liberation, Wesley's theology has the weakness of just economic liberation, which excludes political liberation. But Wesley's pietistic and social strength can contribute to the ecumenical dialogue between minjung theology and the pietism of mainline Korean Protestant churches. Whereas they criticize the capitalism of the laissez faire theory and the monopolization of markets, they also reject violent methods of redistribution like Karl Marx. Thus, the theology of social sanctification revealed in Wesley and minjung theologians is the third alternative between South Korean capitalism and North Korean socialism.
