요약 : This dissertation is designed to help the Korean churches and pastors in understanding theologically and sociologically the cultural backgrounds of the current crisis of Korean families. It also offers a pastoral approach--informed by North American family therapy--to conflicts of Korean families in cultural transition. It is intended to be used as a basis for pastoral and ministerial actions on behalf of Korean families. Bonhoeffer's theology of secularization and Asian theologies of contextualization affirm the assumption that pastoral concerns need to be contextualized in people's particular sociological, cultural, and therapeutic realities.

요약 : Since the second World War the Republic of Korea (South Korea) has been rapidly industrialized and urbanized. Korean families with traditional values experience a serious culture gap in relation to the changing society. The theories of Talcott Parsons and William Ogburn are drawn upon to explicate the nature and dynamics of culture lag, i.e. the persistence of the traditional family structures in spite of the changes in their environments. A review of the empirical studies on the marital and family life of Korean families confirms that culture lag creates conflicts in family relations and operations, such as gaps between traditional rigid family hierarchy and new demand for flexible role structures, and gaps between traditional parenting styles and the new interests of the young generation.

요약 : After analyzing the culture lag phenomena in Korean families, this dissertation assesses the contribution that some North American family therapists can make to a pastoral response to the families in crisis. The theories of Salvador Minuchin and Jay Haley provide the concepts and methods to facilitate structural adjustments of Korean families to the changing society. The therapist's strategic use of authority, directions, and reality-orientedness is proposed to approach the Asian styles of behavior. Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy's contextual family therapy is also incorporated to deal with existential struggles of Korean families under Confucian ethics.

요약 : Methodologically, this project is a critical and constructive cross-cultural dialogue in response to the current crisis in Korean families. It seeks to identify and respond to continuities and tensions between traditional and contemporary Korean family structures, religious and secular resources, Christianity and Confucianism, and Eastern and Western viewpoints. Pastoral principles related to the theological concepts of covenant and the Kingdom of God are delineated to discern Christian responses to the Korean family in transition.
