요약 : In this dissertation, the early Christians' understanding and practice of the integral unity of Word and Sacrament are examined. In Christian ministry, preaching marks the highlight of the ministry of the Word; the Eucharist, along with Baptism, represents the core of the ministry of the Sacrament. Preaching and the Eucharist together, as essential parts of Christian worship, have provided the Church with liturgical authenticity and validity. Without preaching or the Eucharist, Christian worship would forfeit its legitimacy. However, it is also true that in history these two components of Christian worship have not been always treated as harmonious partners in Christian liturgy.

요약 : To examine the relationship between the Word and Sacrament, a historical survey will is applied as a basic methodological tool in this dissertation. Through historical survey, the writer searches and traces historical data which reveals how our Christian ancestors understood the relationship between preaching and the Eucharist in their worship. The Early Christian period, more specifically from the New Testament era to that of Augustine of Hippo, has been chosen as a period on which to focus.

요약 : In chapter II, the Jewish background of Christian worship especially in the connection with the ministry of the Word and Sacrament is explored. Then, the biblical understanding of the Word and Sacrament is dealt in chapter IV and V (the New Testament) and VI (the Old Testament). In chapter VII other historical documents are examined: personal witnesses, the Church Orders, and baptismal homilies. Since this dissertation deals with biblical texts and homilies, in chapter III the writer deals with hermeneutical question: how a liturgical scholar interprets biblical texts?

요약 : This study shows that the Eucharist was highly appreciated in the early Christian ministry of the Word. Consequently, it provides Protestantism with a perspective from which the integral relationship between preaching and the Eucharist is illustrated as a part of their own worship tradition. This study also affirms that biblical typology was an essential hermeneutical tool for the Eucharistic interpretation of the Scripture. It is very interesting to see how typology, which had been used for bridging the Old with the New Testaments, helped the early Christians to understand the Eucharist. The Word of God cannot be isolated from the Sacrament; and the Sacrament needs to be articulated through the vehicle of a rich biblical heritage.
