요약 : The purpose of this study is to explore the impacts of the scientific and scholarly ideal of the modern university on theological education at Union Theological Seminary, New York, during the years 1887-1926. During this period, the marks of the modern university--specialization, the elective system, professionalization, and the empirical research orientation were incorporated into theological education. This study suggests that the current discontents in theological education--the fragmentation of the theological curriculum and the loss of a holistic search for religious truth--originated in the uncritical adaptation to the new university ideal at the turn of the century.

요약 : The methodology of this study involves institutional and intellectual analyses of the history of theological education at Union Theological Seminary. In order to examine structural changes in the Seminary, the presidencies of Thomas Hastings (1887-1897), Charles Hall (1897-1908), Francis Brown (1908-1916), and Arthur McGiffert (1916-1926) are examined with a focus on their work in the Seminary's design, curriculum, and academic degree programs. Concerning the intellectual dimensions at Union, this study investigates the work of four professors--Charles Briggs in Biblical Theology, William Brown in Systematic Theology, Arthur McGiffert in Church History, and George Coe in Practical Theology, looking at their views on theology, methodology, theological education, and science and theology.

요약 : During the years, 1887-1926, the Seminary's and its theologians' efforts to bring theological discussion into the arena of secularized academia, to achieve independence from church dogmatism, to expand the scope of theological outlook in social domains, and to bind science and religion together deserve due recognition. However, two distinctive problems--the fragmentation of theological knowledge by specialization and the limitation of theological knowing by narrow modern epistemology--were inescapable in the Seminary's adaptation to the university ideal and has left a troublesome legacy in theological education today. The study suggests that without a fundamental breakthrough in our concept of theological knowledge and theological knowing, which can make it possible to recover a genuine sense of theology and to perceive, explore, and articulate the truth of religion in a holistic way, the wandering of theological education in the wilderness will continue.
