초록/해제
요약 : The concept of “silent exodus” describes a phenomenon in the Korean Church in the United States where nearly all English-speaking Koreans leave Korean-speaking churches. Dependence on the concept of the silent exodus maintains the tension and conflict among the various generations in the whole Korean community in the U.S. The assumption of generational differentiation is fundamental for the conceptualization of the silent exodus and also helps to create the lines of division within the community. If one focuses only on generational dynamics, the underlying influences which created the differentiation are neglected. The influences referred to and discussed in this dissertation are race dynamics of the U.S., the normative discourse of society and the traditional theory of migration. By revealing these influences this dissertation attempts to establish a less problematic starting point through the concept of “diaspora space” to begin the process of reconciliation and the construction of identity for the Korean community in America.
