요약 : The current Korean immigrant community consists mostly of those who have entered the United States since the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965. One most conspicuous feature of these post-1965 Korean immigrants is that seventy to seventy-five percent of them participate in Protestant ethnic churches. Given that less than twenty percent of the total population in Korea are Protestant Christians, Korean immigrants' extensive involvement in Protestant ethnic churches is puzzling. Why do a vast majority of Korean immigrants join Protestant ethnic churches? This study is an attempt to answer the question, based on literature reviews, survey data and fieldwork of the Korean immigrant community in San Francisco Bay Area.
초록/해제
요약 : There have been various explanations of Korean immigrants' extensive involvement in Protestant ethnic churches. Certain researchers have attributed it to earlier Korean immigrants and their Protestant Christian legacy. Other researchers have emphasized an intermediate role of Protestant Christianity in new Korean immigration to the United States. Still others have stressed various social functions that Protestant ethnic churches carry out in the Korean immigrant community. The first part of this dissertation examines these views and critiques the explanatory limits of earlier studies.
초록/해제
요약 : The balance of this study provides alternative accounts of Korean immigrants' extensive involvement in Protestant ethnic churches. I argue that Protestant ethnic churches have more organizational strengths than secular ethnic associations and non-Protestant ethnic churches in drawing a large number of participants. Further, I conclude that Korean Protestant Christianity whose beliefs and religious practices are characterized as "Evangelical" and "Pentecostal" are more spiritually appealing than Catholicism and Buddhism in the immigrant context.
