요약 : The dissertation examines the relationship between the emergence of Protestantism in Korea and the issue of indigenization. One of the most common explanations for the dramatic growth of Protestantism in Korea is indigenization—the process by which the religion shed its foreign identity and adapted to the new environment. Korean Protestantism did, indeed, develop its own distinctive beliefs and practices, in spite of its origins in Western, predominantly American, missionary activity. The work shares the assumption that indigenization was a major reason for the success of Protestantism in Korea, but at the same time it challenges prevailing views on the nature of the process.

요약 : The argument in the dissertation is two-fold. First, indigenization was not a natural and inevitable molding of Christianity to the native religious landscape, as it is often depicted by theologians and scholars of religion today. Rather, historical analysis reveals a complex process of contestation and negotiation among various individuals and groups—one that involved questions of orthodoxy, as well as social and political tensions. Second, contrary to the view that indigenization was a reflection of Christian tolerance and openness toward other religions, the conclusion in the dissertation is that the motives behind indigenization were not so benign and generous. In fact, indigenization was ultimately a strategy of conversion—a tool for selectively appropriating useful aspects of the older religions in order to understand, explain, and propagate the new and alien doctrines and practices of Christianity. The goal was to prove Christian superiority in the competition for souls.

요약 : This story of indigenization is told through the eyes of the historical actors who shaped and spread the new faith in the early decades of the twentieth century: missionaries, ministers, scholars, evangelists, and lay leaders. Their different roles as well as the interactions, tensions, and conflicts are explored. Moreover, in contrast to much of the literature on indigenization, which treats the topic almost exclusively at the level of broad, abstract ideas and concepts, the dissertation employs an interpretive framework that combines the study of institutions, ideological discourse, and religious practice.
