요약 : The Societies for Reformation of Manners (SRM) extended the puritan call for the creation of a godly society into the eighteenth century. Operating from a base within the recently restored Church of England, the SRM espoused a Calvinist commitment to a moral regeneration of society that doctrinally mirrored that of both Geneva's consistory and earlier puritan reformers, but differed profoundly in both scope and methodology.

요약 : Lacking the cooperation of the ecclesiastical and secular hierarchies, English Calvinists before the English Revolution had been repeatedly stymied in their attempts to effect an eschatological ordering of society?a crucial element of Calvin's faith and a central feature of his political activities in Geneva. When the old order was temporarily eradicated during the Commonwealth, Cromwell's reluctance to establish a new religious orthodoxy, coupled with the eradication of the episcopacy and ecclesiastical courts, Interregnum puritans were left with no effective instruments of religious control to bring a new godly society into existence.

요약 : The Restoration and the reinstatement of the episcopacy in 1660 ended the opportunity for puritans to recreate the disciplinary system of Calvin's Geneva in England, but it did not end the efforts of puritans to create a more godly society. Many moderate puritans took positions within the restored Church of England and continued to press for a reformation of manners. Through private associations like the SRM, these individuals used the language and tools of a burgeoning public sphere of influence to press for their reforms. The print literature published under the auspices of the SRM was carefully constructed to marry a godly eschatology to the pragmatic call for a well-ordered and centrally-controlled state, thereby creating a discourse of public virtue and morality. The SRM developed a thorough and methodical system for the prosecution of moral offenses. Unlike earlier English and contemporaneous continental attempts at social discipline, the SRM's campaign was a sustained national effort driven by individuals either outside or at the periphery of the official state.
