■520    ▼aHomileticians  have  stressed  concrete  life  situations  and  the  particular  social  and  cultural  contexts  of  the  sermon's  audience.  This  project  explores  the  theoretical  and  practical  correlation  between  preaching  and  its  cultural  context.  I  will  narrow  the  scope  of  my  interest  to  the  preaching  theology  and  practice  of  Donald  Owens,  the  first  missionary  from  the  Church  of  the  Nazarene  in  America  to  South  Korea,  and  the  context  of  South  Korea  in  the  1950s.  Chapter  One  investigates  an  important  issue  in  the  field  of  contemporary  homiletics:  the  significance  of  the  socio-cultural  context  in  preaching.  Chapter  Two  analyzes  the  characteristics  of  the  1950s  South  Korean  context  to  which  Donald  Owens  came  as  an  American  missionary  in  May,  1954.
■520    ▼aWho  was  Donald  Owens?  In  Chapter  Three,  Owens's  personal,  social,  cultural  and  ecclesiastical  backgrounds  will  be  explored  to  better  understand  his  preaching  theology  and  practice.  Donald  Owens  and  his  wife,  Adeline  Owens,  came  to  Korea  with  the  objective  to  do  educational  missionary  work  for  the  Church  of  the  Nazarene  in  Korea  and  ultimately  stayed  in  Korea  until  the  summer  of  1965.  What  was  the  theology  of  preaching  Donald  Owens  brought  to  South  Korea?  How  did  he  react  to  both  the  unexpected  and  harsh  conditions,  and  how  relevant  was  his  theology  of  preaching  in  the  context  of  his  new  situation,  which  was  the  postwar  society  of  the  1950s  South  Korea?  Did  the  socio-cultural  context  of  South  Korea  influence  and  reshape  the  theological  content  of  Owens's  preaching?  The  above  questions  will  be  investigated  in  Chapter  Four,  primarily  through  personal  interviews  with  Owens  as  well  as  the  analysis  of  thirteen  extant  sermons.
■520    ▼aChapter  Five  discusses  that  Owens's  preaching  theology  and  practice  was  initially  shaped  out  of  his  American  Midwest  context  and  later  continued  and  further  developed  in  the  Korean  context.  Nevertheless,  some  of  Owens's  preaching  theology  and  theories  were  revised  and  altered  by  his  Korean  life  experience.
