초록/해제
요약 : From 1885 to 1940, American Methodist missionary women contributed to social change, especially for the betterment of Korean women in Korean society and culture through their missionary work. This dissertation examines historical descriptions and analyses of the lives and ministries of American Methodist missionary women in Korea. This study mainly demonstrates the significance of American Methodist missionary women and recognizes their multiple dynamic mission tasks in Korea. It reinterprets the complexity of the work and the role of American Methodist missionary women in cross-cultural circumstances. This research encompasses women's ministry, one of the most important issues in the American Methodism and its extension to Korea. Focusing on the two concepts of “civilizing” (civilization) and “mission” (evangelization), it analyzes the characteristics of American missionary women and their lives and ministries.
초록/해제
요약 : American Methodist missionary women undertook mission work in three major areas: education, medicine, and evangelism. They believed that education was a way to liberate Korean women from the bondage of oppression and further, to create the best leadership in Korean society. They encouraged Korean women to study in educational institutions, especially in higher educational institutions to become future leaders. Providing an effective medium to connect missionary women to Korean women, American Methodist women took care of the poor classes of women who were sick and shunned and they cultivated professionals for medical work. American Methodist women's mission work, through educational and medical work, contributed to the liberation of Korean women and continued to keep its characteristic of “civilization for evangelization” in their mission work.
초록/해제
요약 : Even though it required life commitment, for single missionary women missionary work offered the independence, status, and opportunity for achievement associated with a profession. Missionary wives worked hard to recreate an American home environment and to educate their children along with their mission work for Korean women. In the relationship of sisterhood, friendship, and partnership, American Methodist missionary women's life style as well as their mission work became critically important influences as they became new models for Korean women.
