■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  the  history  of  domestic  abuse  in  sixteenth-century  Nuremberg  from  the  perspective  of  Mentalitätsgeschichte  ,  history  of  mentalities.  It  explores  male  attitudes,  fears,  and  deep-seated  cultural  assumptions  reflected  in  the  literature  on  marriage  and  spousal  violence.  With  the  onset  of  the  Reformation  in  Nuremberg  (1525),  the  civic  and  spiritual  authorities  focused  specifically  on  marriage  as  the  center  for  reform  and  the  battleground  of  the  new  evangelical  city.  This  study  relies  on  a  variety  of  sources:  sermons,  plays,  posters,  penitential  manuals,  proverbs  as  well  as  court  records  and  legal  correspondence.  It  examines  the  complex  gendered  constructions  involved  in  the  definition  of  domestic  violence,  the  debates  and  tensions  associated  with  patriarchal  rule  and  proper  household  discipline,  and  the  legal  mechanisms,  economic  constraints,  and  social  controls  involved  in  the  adjudication  and  mediation  of  spousal  abuse.  Furthermore,  this  work  analyzes  early  modern  perspectives  on  gender,  particularly  masculinity,  to  investigate  the  construction  and  use  of  violence,  and  the  significance  of  the  Reformation.
