■520    ▼aThis  study  will  examine  the  life  of  the  man  whose  dates  are  almost  coterminous  with  the  dates  of  the  Presbyterian  church  in  Korea.
■520    ▼aA  biographical,  and  roughly  chronological,  methodology  will  be  utilized  to  analyze  Park's  contribution  to  the  Korean  church  as  a  whole.  Despite  the  foremost  importance  of  Dr.  Park,  few  studies  have  been  yet  attempted,  one  reason  being  that  he  died  in  1988,  and  we  are  only  now  gaining  sufficient  distance  to  make  an  historical  evaluation.  But  it  is  a  study  much  needed  in  the  Korean  church,  not  only  for  the  sake  of  better  understanding  the  person,  but  most  profitably  to  gain  an  insight  into  the  church  with  which  his  life  was  inextricably  intertwined,  and  to  glean  wisdom  for  the  future  direction  of  the  Korean  church.
■520    ▼aTo  analyze  Park's  life,  his  formative  environment  and  education  will  be  probed,  in  the  hope  of  shedding  light  on  some  of  the  strengths,  weaknesses,  and  salient  features  of  Park  the  man  and  the  theologian.  Though  Park  was  a  pastor  as  well  a  scholar,  we  will  concern  ourselves  mostly  with  his  writing  of  commentaries  and  teaching  in  the  seminaries,  since  his  historical  importance  lies  more  in  these  areas.
■520    ▼aWe  will  see  that  Park  the  scholar  can  never  be  separated  from  Park  the  historical  figure,  the  church  leader  in  turbulent  years  who  strove  for  purity  and  much  needed  reform  in  the  church.
■520    ▼aThe  research  urges  the  conclusion  that  Park  was  one  of  the  most  influential  men  in  the  twentieth  century  Korean  church--as  a  teacher,  Bible  commentator,  and  reformer.  But  his  influence  is  as  complex  as  it  is  important,  and  we  will  not  flinch  from  noting  the  man's  weaknesses  as  well,  his  lack  of  depth  and  occasional  lapses  in  wisdom.  In  particular,  we  will  lament  that  in  spite  of  Park's  sound  doctrine  and  piety  of  life,  certain  personal  limitations  prevented  him  from  rising  to  the  challenge  brought  about  by  the  modern  political  situation  of  Korea.
