요약 : Bishop Joseph Hall (1574–1656) was a distinguished English clergyman who came of age in the late Elizabethan years and whose clerical career spanned the reigns of James I and Charles I and extended into Cromwell's Protectorate. A man of rare literary and rhetorical creativity, Hall published prolifically throughout his mature years. He was especially known for his pioneering work in English satire and for his published meditations on Scriptural passages. His devotional works were widely read and appreciated by Englishmen from all across the theological spectrum.

요약 : As a moderate conforming Calvinist who served as one of the English delegates to the Synod of Dort and subsequently was appointed bishop of Exeter, Hall's career serves as a barometer of official policy toward moderate Calvinism and episcopacy. After the Synod of Dort, Hall became troubled about the peace and unity of the English Church as Arminianism became an increasingly powerful force within the hierarchy. He attempted to mediate the burgeoning conflict between Calvinism and Arminianism and maintain peace within the English Church by establishing a moderate Calvinist middle ground upon which all parties could meet. However, this attempt was rendered moot by the unexpected death of James I in 1625.
초록/해제
요약 : The accession of Charles I and the growing ascendancy of Arminians like William Laud eventually placed Hall in the undesirable position of choosing between his Calvinism and his conformist convictions. As the politico-religious context continued to polarize and the Civil War approached, Hall deliberately chose to emphasize conformity over Calvinism, thereby diminishing his viability as a spokesman for the Calvinist middle ground he had sought to establish. While he retained his Calvinistic convictions, Hall wrote in defense of a broad Church perspective and of episcopacy, resulting in a growing estrangement from his fellow religionists. His continued conformity under Archbishop Laud and his apparent support for Laud's programs caused his fellow Calvinists to see him as a tool of what they considered to be an Arminian/pro-papal Church hierarchy. As a result, Hall eventually was imprisoned by Parliament and, after a brief tenure as bishop of Norwich, was sequestered from office.
