요약 : I believe that the most important thinking in this century is exemplified in the writing of Gregory Bateson. Certainly, his essays on the ecology of the mind promise great challenge to those whose terrain is human behavior and human experience. The notion of transcendent mind, while hardly new, has not had any drastic effect on the scientific traditions which hold that mind is imminent, idiosyncratic, and that experience can be reduced to sets of causally-related variables. Bateson, and others who argue for transcendent functions of social systems, have largely been ignored. But now, in a world which is said to be threatened by the very products of Newtonian thinking, more people are interested in the idea that reductionism creates its own new data which is unpredictable. A famous example is DDT, which has indeed killed insects as predicted, but which also has doomed all the Atlantic shorebirds to extinction, which was not predicted. In these times, in this decade, it is fashionable to despair, to believe that the world is close to collapse. Along with that goes an increased belief in man's control over his systems, and the idea that a more intensified search for cause and effects will save us.

요약 : I do not believe in this point of view, but it is not easy for the disbeliever to prove that something is unprovable, or to use logic to demonstrate the limits of logic. The notion of a transcendent social mind is a comforting one, but if it is transcendent can we see it? Must a system have its own logic which is incomprehensible to any of its comprehending parts? When and how does a system reveal itself, and how shall we know how to behave?

요약 : These are some of the questions which prompted the research to be described in this paper. When beginning this inquiry, if there was a beginning, I had to keep in mind two things: first, I am raised a Dutch Calvinist, growing up with the assumption that all events are preordained, and that we are all living under water. Second, most of the significant changes in my life have occurred unexpectedly, unpredicted, and they have almost always been accompanied by striking and unexplainable coincidences.
