■520    ▼aPope  Boniface  VIII's  bull,  Clericos  laicos  (1296),  extended  the  peace  between  France  and  England  but  his  arrogance  destroyed  the  papal  monarchy.  This  study  of  Church  and  State  in  thirteenth  century  will  show  how  Archbishop  Robert  Winchelsey  and  the  clerical  exemption  from  temporal  taxation  in  England  achieved  peace.
■520    ▼aChapter  1  introduces  the  reader  to  England  in  the  1290's,  Edward  I's  need  for  additional  revenue,  and  Winchelsey's  opposition  to  clerical  taxation.  Chapter  2  studies  the  medieval  debate  of  the  Church  and  State,  the  history  of  papal  clerical  taxation  in  England  from  Anglo-Saxon  times,  and  the  co-mingling  of  ecclesiastical  and  royal  financial  interests  in  the  thirteenth  century.  Chapter  3  examines  Clericos  laicos  and  Winchelsey's  interpretation  of  periculosa  necessitas,  necessity  caused  by  danger.  Chapter  4  concludes  that  although  the  Pope  prevented  a  major  war  it  cost  him  his  dignity  and  weakened  the  papacy.  The  Appendix  surveys  five  of  the  chronicles  that  were  primary  sources.
