■520    ▼aThis  Dissertation,  concerning  Mount  Athos  Megisti  Lavra  Codex  174,  contains  two  parts:  (1)  A  Diplomatic  Edition  of  the  text  of  the  Codex,  which  is  an  exact  reproduction  of  the  original.  This  phase  involved  transcribing  the  entire  Greek  text  from  Medieval  Greek  scripts  into  modern  Greek  letters.  Marginal  scholia,  were  shown  to  be  part  of  the  main  text.  In  many  places  the  paper  was  deteriorated  and  the  text  corrupt,  requiring  emendation.  Thus,  the  work  of  transcription  was  followed  by  extensive  paleographical/philological  analysis,  involving  correction  of  mispellings,  supplementation  of  missing  letters,  corrections  of  manifest  corruptions,  etc.  At  this  point  philology  became  historical  theology,  because  the  authorship  of  the  Catena  itself  and  the  citations  quoted  in  it  had  to  be  identified,  requiring  extensive  research  into  patristic  literature.  (2)  The  second  phase  of  my  Dissertation  is  an  introduction  followed  by  several  chapters  giving  the  reader  the  results  of  my  historical,  theological,  and  exegetical  studies  on  the  Codex.  Mount  Athos  Megisti  Lavra  Codex  174  (L  174)  is  a  Catena.  By  the  Latin  term  'Catena'  reference  is  made  to  those  compilatory  works  that  emerged  around  middle  5th  century-beginning  6th  century,  out  of  the  necessity  to  select  and  organize  the  most  important  exegetical  texts  that  had  been  written  by  that  time  on  the  Old  and  New  Testament  by  the  Fathers  of  the  Church.  L  174  is  classified  as  an  exegetical  Catena,  in  contrast  to  a  dogmatic  or  ascetic-moral  anthology.  Such  a  Catena  has  as  its  sole  purpose  the  compilation  of  a  continuous  interpretation  of  a  biblical  text,  in  this  case  the  Gospel  according  to  Saint  Luke.  Although  this  Catena  is  ascribed  in  its  title  to  John  Chrysostom,  upon  investigation  it  appeared  that  the  author/compiler  of  the  Catena  in  its  final  form,  as  it  has  been  transmitted,  is  an  Anonymous.  However,  it  was  determined  that  L  174  is  related  to  the  Catenae  of  Nicetas,  Bishop  of  Heraclea,  and  pseudo-Petrus  Laodicenus.
