요약 : In his 1969 philosophical work, The Acting Person (Osoba I czyn, literally, Person and Act), Karol Wojtyla analyzes man's experience of himself as someone who performs autonomous actions. He concludes that while man's ontological structure is essentially personal, the performance of distinctly human actions is the reserve of persons whose self-consciousness and rationality have formed a distinct "I" or psycho-moral subjectivity. The sense of self allows persons to determine themselves, for good or for ill, by the actions they freely perform. It follows that human vulnerability stemming from purely physical or material limitations (e.g., blindness or poverty) does not prevent someone from freely determining himself if his rationality and sense of self are adequately formed and intact. Otherwise, Wojtyla does not ascribe human agency to the person, whose weakness and dependency make him especially vulnerable (e.g., the infant or Alzheimer's patient).
초록/해제
요약 : In 1975, Wojtyla affirmed that a newly conceived child actively gives himself to his parents. As Pope John Paul II, Wojtyla theologically developed his anthropology of human self-expression through action until, finally, his 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae affirmed that even the weakest, most radically dependent members of society can communicate through a distinctly human form of agency known as "the silent language of a profound sharing of affection" (no. 19). The dissertation examines the development of Wojtyla/John Paul II's thought on agency in vulnerable human beings. The purpose of the dissertation is to evaluate that development.
초록/해제
요약 : Part I examines Wojtyla's philosophical anthropology and its relevance to the vulnerable and their agency. Part II examines Pope John Paul II's theological understanding of the person, showing how it enriches and broadens his understanding of both vulnerability and the agency of the vulnerable. Part III shows how the Pope applies his anthropology to specific types of vulnerable persons and their agency. And Part IV evaluates The Acting Person as it relates to the theme of agency in the vulnerable, showing how other sources, both philosophical and non-philosophical, serve to complement that study and help it support more fully Pope John Paul II's explicit statements defending vulnerable human agents.
