요약 : The dissertation is a study of how Theophilus of Antioch read and used the inspired texts. Reference to Greco-Roman reading strategies and forensic rhetorical conventions is made in order to transcend the limitations of older studies which rely solely on modern categories to describe exegesis and uses of inspired texts. The dissertation suggests that ancient forensic rhetorical conventions intended for witness interrogation may play an important role in studies of patristic use of Scripture in apologetic works addressed to Gentiles. Besides these approaches for characterizing Theophilus' use of the inspired texts, his participation in exegetical traditions is also described. One of the methods for finding such traditions uses an innovative custom software application for locating testimony sources.

요약 : The introduction deals with methodologies and with the history of research concerning Theophilus and concerning exegesis in the second century. Chapter one shows that in his first letter to Autolycus, Theophilus did not write as one who misunderstood Christianity as claimed by some modern critics. Rather, his use of the inspired texts demonstrates that he produced a tightly constructed and carefully organized appeal on behalf of the true God which was consistent with traditional early Christian apologetic. It is further demonstrated that he used inspired texts creatively but also followed certain exegetical traditions. Chapter two shows that in his second letter to Autolycus, Theophilus again used the inspired texts in accord with traditional early Christian apologetic to create a carefully organized appeal on behalf of the biblical history of humanity and the cosmos. Chapter three shows that in his third letter to Autolycus, Theophilus argued similarly as in his first two letters for the trustworthiness of the philosophical, ethical, and chronological content of the inspired texts. It is argued throughout that Theophilus emphasized the trustworthiness of the inspired texts in view of his ultimate goal of opening the eyes of his pagan friend to the reality of the one true God.
