요약One of the most prominent of the groups that modern scholars have called “Jewish Christian” is the Ebionites. This designation of the Ebionites, however, is not explicitly supported by the primary sources, none of which used the title. Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Eusebius, and Epiphanius, among others, painted a complex portrait that described the Ebionites, on the one hand, as followers of Mosaic Law who held anthropocentric beliefs about Christ and, on the other, as influenced by elements of so-called gnostic belief. Whether and to what extent the patristic descriptions of the Ebionites served the polemical interests of the early church has not been sufficiently explored.

요약The dissertation examines the primary sources regarding the Ebionites, specifically the writings of the five authors referenced above, in order to determine why the group was rejected by the author, and assesses the elements of Ebionite practice and belief that caused difficulty for each church father studied. The dissertation consists of several parts. The initial section discusses the history of the definition of “Jewish Christianity” in the academic literature and the place of the Ebionites in this academic category. The following chapters examine the works of church fathers and the context of their statements concerning the Ebionites. The concluding segment uses the information gathered from the examination of the patristic works to discuss the characteristics of the Ebionites.
Abstracts/Etc
요약The dissertation argues that “Jewish Christian” is a poor appellation for the group, which likely included both ethnic Jews and gentiles, and that the wide-ranging category of “Jewish Christian” has clouded research into the Ebionites. The dissertation claims that there is little evidence of gnostic influence, as that term is usually understood, on core Ebionite doctrine and provides conclusions regarding the historical accuracy of each of the patristic authors' descriptions of the Ebionites.
