요약 : How did the Church Fathers conceptualize the relationship between their Old Testament, the Septuagint, and the Hebrew Bible in circulation among the Jews? This dissertation addresses this question from several angles. After a brief introduction situating this research within current scholarship (Chapter One), I explore the criteria which featured in ancient Jewish and Christian discussions regarding the canon of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament (Chapter Two). Whereas some Jews talked about the date of a particular book being determinative for canonicity, Christians disagreed whether to limit their Old Testament to books accepted among the Jews (a principle I have called the "synagogal criterion" of canonicity), or to expand the Jewish canon to include other books read in the Church ("ecclesiastical criterion").

요약 : Beyond these latter two criteria, a third seems to have been common to all the Fathers: to be considered canonical a document had to have been originally composed in the Hebrew language (Chapter Three). This "Hebrew criterion" is clearly discernible in the correspondence between Julius Africanus and Origen, both of whom accept its validity while disagreeing on other aspects of the Old Testament. Other Fathers apparently acknowledged this criterion as well, as seems clear from their encompassing the entire Old Testament within the translation from Hebrew accomplished by the Seventy translators, and from their frequently linking the twenty-two canonical books to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

요약 : The fourth chapter investigates the ideologies surrounding the Hebrew language to be found in various streams of Judaism and in Christianity. Rabbinic literature attests elaborate views about "the holy language", but even prior to the rise of the rabbinic iv system, some Jews elevated Hebrew by declaring it the original language of mankind. Christians echoed this latter view, but they do not seem to have been particularly influenced by the more developed notions of the Rabbis.

요약 : The final chapter considers how the idea of the "original Hebrew text" featured in the imaginations of those Jews and Christians who relied on and attributed great authority to Greek translations. Both Jews (e.g., Philo) and Christians held the Hebrew text in high esteem, and they took great pains to establish that the Greek text they used matched perfectly what they considered to be the original Hebrew. Christians usually explained divergences between the Septuagint and the Minor Versions in teams of corruption in the Greek or Hebrew textual traditions, or by anti-Christian bias in the more recent Jewish translators.
