- 요약 : The memory of Origen as biblical interpreter has most often been obscured by his own interpreters' reactions to his method, namely, allegorical exegesis. For this reason, the narratives constructed surrounding Origen's place in the history of biblical interpretation have largely been driven by evaluations of his exegetical results. This dissertation attempts to bypass this evaluative approach by asking not how Origen's method shapes his conclusions about scripture, but, rather, how his interpretive method works on his hearers in order to make meaning possible. Building off of some of the most important work on Origen's hermeneutical procedure of the last generation, this project uses Stanley Fish's work on Milton's Paradise Lost and his theory of Interpretive Communities as a framework for understanding how meaning is made from texts and uses this method as a lens for understanding how Origen makes scripture meaningful for his hearers. Origen's preaching from three distinct biblical literary genres is used. What emerges is a picture of Origen's exegetical method as working on his hearers in such as way as to make the narrative of the scripture text the new life situation of his hearers, thus achieving a distinct form of what Fish identifies as the foundation for all meaning-making: situated-ness. Through turning his hearer into the text, fashioning the text as script, and presenting the interpretation of the text as indicative of a larger, cosmic struggle, Origen is also seen as holding to a unique understanding of the primacy of scripture. That Origen is able similarly to situate his hearers in the text using both allegorical and non-allegorical methods reveals Origen's way of making meaning to be representative of his basic approach to scripture rather than a mere accident of his allegorical method.
