- 요약 : The difficulties Pope acknowledges in the process of acquiring knowledge and in creating moral guidelines to emulate are examined in this paper. Reading the Moral Epistles as a series, we see Pope's moral advice move from the philosophical realm of the first two epistles, to a mixture of philosophy and empirical observations, then finally to the practical morality demonstrated in architecture and gardening of the last epistle. Reflecting that our judgment is based on fleeting substance, Pope turns to concordia discors to reconcile the inherent contraries of reality. Because of the inevitability and the necessity of the existence of contradictory extremes, moral guidance must be found in the harmonious reconciliation of creating a balance between extremes.
