■520    ▼aMarcionism  was  a  serious  threat  to  Christianity  in  the  second  through  the  fifth  centuries.  In  response  to  this  threat,  the  Church  Fathers  defended  the  developing  orthodox  positions  and  attacked  the  Marcionites  through  literary  and  political  means.  Although  the  Fathers  were  united  in  their  estimation  of  Marcionism  as  a  heresy,  there  was  no  single  method  or  motive  for  refuting  the  Marcionites.  The  polemic  against  the  Marcionites  was  multifaceted  and  sometimes  contradictory.
■520    ▼aOne  of  the  reasons  for  the  diversity  within  the  polemic  against  the  Marcionites  was  the  diversity  among  the  Marcionites  themselves.  It  is  certain  that  the  theology  and  emphases  of  the  later  Marcionites  developed  beyond  that  of  Marcion  himself.  Part  One  of  this  study  provides  a  background  survey  of  Marcion  and  the  Marcionites  as  a  foundation  for  the  study  of  the  diversity  in  the  anti-Marcionite  polemic.  It  is  probable  that  some  of  the  different  details  and  emphases  in  the  polemic  are  the  result  of  the  different  Marcionite  theologies  represented  by  specific  Marcionites  encountered  by  the  different  Fathers.
■520    ▼aThe  major  reason  for  the  diversity  in  the  polemic,  however,  is  that  the  Fathers  brought  to  the  polemic  their  own  immediate  historical,  political,  social  and  theological  concerns.  The  various  immediate  contexts  of  the  Fathers  influenced  in  a  major  degree  the  details  that  an  individual  Father  chose  to  include  in  refuting  the  Marcionites.  The  result  was  a  development  and  embellishment  of  the  polemic  against  the  Marcionites  over  the  Patristic  period.  Focusing  on  the  contexts,  contributions,  emphases  and  embellishments  of  each  polemicists,  Part  Two  of  this  study  provides  a  survey  of  the  development  of  the  anti-Marcionite  polemic  from  the  earliest  allusions  contemporary  to  Marcion  through  the  polemic  in  the  middle  of  the  fifth  century.
■520    ▼aFinally,  with  the  historical  development  and  the  emphases  and  embellishments  of  the  individual  Fathers  traced,  a  systematic  study  of  the  methods  and  motives  for  refuting  Marcionism  is  provided  in  Part  Three  of  the  study.  Numerous  methods  were  employed  to  refute  the  Marcionites.  These  included:  simple  and  passing  rebukes;  identification  with  the  Devil;  identification  with  the  Gnostics;  the  use  of  successio  haereticorum;  the  use  of  ketzergeschichte;  exposes;  the  identification  with  ancient  philosophies;  the  use  of  praescriptione;  the  use  of  logic  and  rhetoric;  exposing  the  diversity  among  the  Marcionites;  the  use  of  Scripture;  dialogues;  and  treatises.  The  various  motives  may  be  classified  as  political  motives,  theological  motives,  philosophical  motives,  and  sociological  motives.  There  was  no  singular  method  or  motive  for  refuting  the  Marcionites;  many  existed.  Both  the  methods  employed  and  the  motives  for  refuting  the  Marcionites  evolved  and  were  dependent  on  the  changing  contexts  of  the  Fathers.
