■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  argues  for  an  "intratextual"  reading  of  The  Dunciad  (1743):  that  is,  an  approach  which  explains  how  the  apparatus  of  the  poem  helps  to  both  reveal  and  perform  the  argument  of  the  poem.  The  opening  chapter  reviews  the  scholarship  on  The  Dunciad.  Chapter  Two  maintains  that  the  text  should  be  granted  a  unique  ontological  status  and,  in  the  process,  calls  for  a  reconception  of  the  role  of  annotation.  Chapter  Three  explains  the  advantages  of  a  holistic,  intratextual  paradigm  within  which  to  read  The  Dunciad.  Chapter  Four  applies  this  recommended  paradigm  to  the  "nuclear"  text  (the  poem  proper)  and  its  annotations.  Chapter  Five  applies  the  paradigm  to  the  "extended"  text  of  The  Dunciad:  the  various  pretexts  and  posttexts  which  attend  to  the  poem.
