요약 : This work consists of a fresh translation of Gregory Nazianzus' Flight to Pontus, along with a theological commentary of this treatise. The treatise itself is this Church Father's explanation as to why he fled from his calling and subsequent ordination. Two reasons Gregory Nazianzus gave were: his longing for solitude and the contemplative life, and the hastiness with which he was ordained--reluctantly submitting more to the urgings of his father than to the immediate promptings of God's Spirit. Gregory gave two further, and more significant, reasons for his reluctance to take up the yoke of ministry: the poor state of the priesthood at that time and his sense of his own insufficiency. The remainder of the treatise, therefore, is concerned with describing the difficulties and responsibilities of ordained ministry, and, as a result, what Gregory views as the preparation necessary prior to assuming this office. Running throughout, and holding the entire treatise together, is a beautiful, tender thread of reverence and awe for both the priesthood and God, in whose service this work is ultimately performed.

요약 : The commentary accompanying this translation, using Gregory as a guide, examines ordained ministry in terms of the call, ordination, and priesthood versus priesthood of all believers; the necessity for study, both general and special; the nature and significance of preaching; the teaching office and its role in preserving the Christian identity, particularly in the context of pluralism and inclusivism; pastoral counseling and how, given humankind's complexity, Gregory employs what we might term the "principle of variability" to effect healing. Interspersed throughout are the insights and observations which the Church Fathers shared with Gregory Nazianzus on these various aspects of ordained ministry.
