요약 : Much of the current writing on the biblical description of the destruction of Sodom attempts to construct an exhaustive "original" meaning of the account given in Genesis. This is true even for the wave of revisionist interpretation of the text popularized by Bailey and Boswell, a fact that is surprising given the general skepticism of late twentieth-century critics in the face of any effort to fix a definitive "authorial" moment. As a result, discussion of the text of Genesis 18 and 19, seems to devolve into a simplistic argument between those who see the story as a lesson about hospitality and opponents who object that it is a condemnation of same-sex relations, particularly in non-academic religious and gay culture. Beginning with the premise that the text of Genesis 18 and 19 contains no implicit, "original" meaning besides the actual words presented in the texts of the story, this study proceeds to describe the way in which Christian writers appropriated the moral structure of judgment, condemnation and rescue which underlies the biblical account. Focusing on Anglo-Saxon and Carolingian writers who inherited and preserved the works of earlier writers, this dissertation identifies four specific types of discourse in which Sodom was likely to appear. The first chapter deals with descriptions of the Holy Land and the purported physical evidence for the destruction of Sodom. The second chapter deals with Agobard of Lyons' injunction to Christians to shun the company of Jews and to curse such unbelievers by shaking the dust from their feet. The third chapter examines discussion of the sexual sins of Sodom in the Visio Wettini and penitential literature. Each chapter considers the ways in which these writers and texts used the diverse traditions of the Latin fathers in appropriating the moral structure of the Sodom narrative. The final chapter compares the use of Sodom in two rhetorical traditions--the sermons of the officially sanctioned Rogationtide observances and the often condemned, and often copied, "apocryphal" Sunday Letter--in an attempt to find the destination between "authorized" and "unauthorized" uses of the destruction of Sodom.
