■520    ▼aOn  October  19,  1997,  Pope  John  Paul  II  declared  Saint  Thérèse  of  Lisieux  (1873–1897)  a  “doctor  of  the  universal  church.”  Thérèse  thus  became  the  youngest  among  the  33  officially  recognized  doctors,  the  closest  chronologically  to  our  own  times,  the  first  to  be  named  since  Paul  VI  temporarily  suspended  further  concessions  of  the  title  in  1972,  and  only  the  third  woman  to  be  so  designated.  The  pope  himself  acknowledged  that  Thérèse  might  seem  a  “surprising”  choice,  since  she  died  virtually  unknown  at  the  age  of  24,  had  a  limited  education,  and  published  no  writings.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  the  reasons  given  for  and  against  bestowing  the  doctorate  on  Thérèse  and  the  official  explanations  of  the  significance  of  this  action,  especially  as  these  are  found  in  the  documents  of  the  canonical  process.  This  analysis  leads  in  turn  to  a  broader  consideration  of  the  role  of  doctors  of  the  church,  and  saints  in  general,  within  the  theology.
